The 18-year-old defender joined the Club in the summer of 2021 and hit the ground running, winning the U18 Elite Youth League in his first season as a Hibee.

That title win led to the wee Hibees qualifying for the UEFA Youth League, where Megwa played his part in helping the U19 squad progress through the first two rounds to reach the last 24 of the competition and set up a showdown with German giants Borussia Dortmund next month.

The defender’s performances for the U19s in Europe and the Hibs Dev Squad in the cinch Reserve League have earned Kanayo a call-up to Lee Johnson's matchday squad on several occasions this season, an experience which the youngster has been relishing.

“I have been loving it here at Hibs. Ever since I came here, I have become more and more comfortable with the rest of the team and all the coaches and I am really enjoying my football at the moment.

“Training with the First Team has been really good for me as well. First Team training is a whole different tempo, but it is great for me to see what kind of level you need to be at to make it in the team.

“The standard of everything is much higher, there is no margin for error and it is obviously much more physically demanding too.

“My main goal is to break into that First Team on a regular basis so it has been great to be involved with the squad.”

Kanayo was on the bench for the First Team against both Hearts and Dundee United this month and has been getting more minutes for the Dev Squad in recent weeks, helping his side keep a clean sheet in their most recent 2-0 victory over Dundee United Reserves on Tuesday.

“It was a good win” Kanayo told us.

“In the first half, we were the better team but we couldn’t get that goal. At half-time, the coaches told us that the goal will come if we keep switching the ball and get in more one v one situations. Thankfully that happened and we managed to get two good goals.

“Steve and Gareth set the team up with the Borussia Dortmund game in their minds, they told us to have that game in the back of our minds so it is good to get the win and it has given us a lot of confidence going into that one.

“We are all really excited for the next round of the UEFA Youth League, it is probably the biggest game of our lives, to be honest.

“It is a great chance for us to try and go further in the tournament but also to try and challenge ourselves and progress as players.”
