Hanlon, who has captained us on many occasions, will take over the role from David Gray, who joined the club’s coaching staff this summer.
The Edinburgh-born defender has made over 450 appearances for our first team having made his debut back in January 2008 against Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Scottish Cup. He was also given a testimonial for us back in 2018.
He has consistently performed and impressed on the pitch, with his leadership abilities shining through, and earned his first Scotland cap in 2020.
Paul McGinn has been named as the club’s Vice-Captain and will lead the team out if Hanlon is unavailable.
Head Coach Jack Ross commented:
“With David (Gray) stepping into a coaching role, it left a big void because he’s been brilliant Club Captain.
“Paul (Hanlon) assumed Club Captain responsibility during a lot of my time here so far and he’s done brilliantly, in terms of his own performance level and what we’ve achieved as a team.
“I want to say it was a straightforward decision and natural progression, but that would downplay the significance and the honour of it because he deserves this opportunity.
“I think it’s really important for Hibs fans to know that he was genuinely delighted and proud to have this responsibility and to be Captain of this club.
“I’m really pleased with Paul McGinn as Vice-Captain too, he delivers consistently and he’s a well-rounded man. He will provide excellent support for Paul Hanlon and will add good balance.”
